Closed systems must be protected with safety valves in order to protect people, environment and investments against damage, when other safety equipment such as safety switches can not manage to put a stop to the pressure rise, which otherwise can cause the plant to burst.
The safety valve protects the system against unallowed high pressure and is set to open, and at maximum 10% pressure rise, blow out the right amount of fluid within a certain time, at a pressure not higher than the plant MAWP (Maximum the Allowed Working Pressure = Design pressure = design pressure).
