Making the parts work together in district heating

Supplying energy-efficient and cost-effective district heating to multiple buildings in a community is an appealing concept. However, you must consider many factors to get the right products in place, such as capacity, maintenance, scalability and lifecycle cost.

Ownership and maintenance also vary. In some cases, an energy company owns and maintains both the network and the substations. In other cases, network ownership is separated from that of the stations. Regardless of the situation, Armatec helps you select the right components, including the critical heat exchanger for the substation.

Here are five principles for optimizing district heating that guide our work:

  • Maximize energy yield: Maintaining low flows on the distribution side enhances energy exchange and reduces return temperature.
  • Consider the details: Use anticipated outdoor temperatures to minimize peak loads, and utilize heat exchangers with idle function for tap water.
  • Select certified heat exchangers: Choose heat exchangers with AHRI certification for easier dimensioning, ensuring a balance between low and high flows.
  • Get right-sized components: Avoid oversized pipelines and components to prevent increased distribution flows and return temperatures in the district heating system.
  • Balance with precision: Achieve accurate system balancing to ensure all branches receive the appropriate flow, performing in accordance with specifications.

Choosing an AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute) certified heat exchanger assures the exchanger delivers according to specifications. When you can trust the performance of the heat exchanger, you can balance the system correctly and optimize the return temperature. Otherwise, you risk getting caught in endless fault-tracing to address fluctuating indoor climates and high energy consumption.
